Panama Travel Guide
There is no escape from the fact that Panama is the crossroads of the world and why should there be? The Panama Canal may not be natural but it is spectacular and 100% Panamanian since the country successfully assumed maintenance and management responsibility from the United States at the end of 1999. Once obsessed purely with banking and hazy memories of one of the world's most notorious dictators, Panama can be heady stuff.
But there is life beyond Panama City. The autonomous region of the San Bias Islands provides a precious moment of calm and tranquility. The true wilderness of the Darien still offers one of the great challenges this side of space travel. To the west, on the Azuero Peninsula in the Chiriqui Highlands and around the Bocas del Toro, Panamanians and visitors alike are discovering new things to do. Slowly, and slightly nervously, Panama is finding out what fun can be like.
